How to Measure Your Pet

The right size makes all the difference. A harness that fits well is comfier and safer, and a coat that fits keeps your pet warm without rubbing. It takes two minutes with a soft tape measure (or a piece of string and a ruler).

What to measure

Measurement Where to measure Used for
Neck Around the base of the neck, where a collar sits. Collars, harnesses, coats, recovery collars
Chest Around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Harnesses, vests, coats, recovery suits, life jackets
Back length From the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Coats, jumpers, raincoats, onesies, costumes
Paw width Stand your pet on paper, mark the widest points of the front paw and measure between them. Boots and socks
Body length (lying down) From nose to base of the tail while your pet is curled or stretched out as they usually sleep. Beds, crates, carriers
Weight Weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding your pet, and subtract. Carriers, hammocks, lift harnesses, cots

Tips for a good fit

  • Measure while your pet is standing, not sitting.
  • Keep the tape snug but not tight. You should be able to slide two fingers under it.
  • For fluffy coats, press the tape gently into the fur.
  • Between two sizes? Choose the larger one, especially for harnesses and coats.
  • For beds, add about 15–25 cm (6–10 in) to your pet's sleeping length so they can stretch out.
  • Always check the size details on the product page, as sizes vary between products.
